[This is taken from Saint Joseph's Baltimore Catechism #2, Lesson 10, page 67.]
Standards of Christ
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, that is, those who love the humble condition of the poor.
- Blessed are the meek.
- Blessed are they who mourn.
- Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after justice, that is, not after the things of this world, but the grace of God and all that goes with it.
- Blessed are the merciful.
- Blessed are the clean of heart, that is, those whose hearts are clean of desire for pleasure and desire only God.
- Blessed are the peacemakers.
- Blessed are they who suffer persecution.
Standards of This World
- Be a successful man, that is, one who makes a lot of money.
- Get things your own way.
- We have a right to enjoy life.
- Love the things of this world.
- Get even with those who hurt you.
- Seek pleasure of all kinds.
- Am I my brother’s keeper?
- Avoid suffering, and if it comes, complain about it.
The Standards of Christ cause a certain amount of suffering, but they lead to great happiness even here on earth, and to heaven afterward.
The Standards of the World may give a certain amount of pleasure, but they lead to unhappiness on earth, and to hell in the next life.
