Feast of Our Lady's Assumption, 2008 -- at Tully Reservoir

Sister Mary Bernadette, M.I.C.M., went to her reward on December 16, 2011. She was just shy of her ninety-second birthday. She had a very full life (you may read her obituary here), but she was always looking towards eternity. Her special love was for the Christ Child; so, it is particularly appropriate that she should die in the month of the Divine Infancy. I have gathered a few pictures from the last ten years of her life to give you an idea of her joy and patience. Same location (the Reservoir), but now it is August 5, 2007 Fourth of July 2008 Special transportation at the 2008 Blueberry Fiddle Festival Feast of Our Lady's Assumption, 2008 -- at Tully Reservoir A 2008 group shot with all the Sisters From the Sisters' 2008 Thanksgiving Day skit -- Sister's last appearance on stage (but not her last use of her acting ability -- she loved an audience!) March 25, 2009 Sister Maria Rosaria and Sister Marie Gabrielle took their first vows on this day (3/25/2009). A year later (3/25/2010), Sister holds a little Bosonetto baby at Brother Joseph Mary's Profession reception. July 2011 - Sister Marie Therese takes Sister for a little stroll at what was her last trip to the ocean (she loved the water!). A little polka music (or the Blue Danube) helps the feet to move more readily! 11/22/2011 - Back from the hospital (Sister had pneumonia) and wearing oxygen, Sister watches a skit rehearsal. Here is Sister with some of her relatives (12/7/2011). She is starting to be less and less alert. This was the last day that she was able to do any walking, even with assistance. But she can still summon a smile when asked! (12/7/2011) Or when looking at a baby! (12/8/2011) 12/9/2011 - We re-arranged the convent, moving Sister's hospital bed to the central area. Completely bedridden now, we wanted her to be in the midst of the community and able to have visitors. 12/10/11 - A baby can still get the most animated response! 12/10/2011 - The mothers of little ones were very kind about coming over for lots of short visits. 12/13/2011 -- Here she reached up to make the Sign of the Cross on little Madelene's forehead (to reach like that required quite a bit of effort - the last time we saw her reach up). Sister received the Last Rites on December 14 -- with the junior and senior high school students (plus friends and relatives) in attendance. Our boys are all altar servers -- here they join in the Confiteor. Sister was alert for the annointing of her senses. Sister died at 8:08 on December 16 during the Litany for the Dying. This picture was taken about thirty minutes later. The three sacramentals of a Slave: the Rosary, Brown Scapular, and Miraculous Medal. 10:02 pm that evening -- Peace at last! December 17 -- Sister's bed is empty, like the altar on Holy Saturday (representing the tomb). The little shrine Sister Maria Rosaria had set up in the central area for Sister Mary Bernadette to look at -- her statues and pictures from her room, plus some relics and flowers. Oh - to be a clown!

At the End of the Year Performance (this year on June 12), every class puts on a little demonstration of what they learned during the past year. Hopefully you can see how much fun we had from the pictures! Sister Mary Peter's beginning fiddle class Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Look at that coloring job! Bring flowers of the fairest; bring flowers of the rarest . . .

The May Procession is an important highlight of our school (and community) year. The event allows us to honor our heavenly Mother is a special way, and the procession is the impetus for us to get the grounds cleaned up after the winter storms. The Sisters beg the flowers from vendors of a flower market and the girls come to help them make crowns and bouquets.

The sedia is ready to be carried (after Our Lady is crowned). The statue is one of two Pilgrim Virgins in our care. Hailey and Lucia get ready for the first crowning. A St. Patrick's Day Skit

On the Sunday closest to the feasts of Saint Patrick (March 17) and Saint Joseph (March 19) we hold one of our annual entertainments (programs). These variety shows, which always rely heavily on the school children, are videotaped and available on DVD through the Saint Benedict Center Bookstore. Sister Maria Philomena, vice principal and high school teacher at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Richmond, NH, was recently selected as a Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). A role model to pupils, Sister Maria Philomena was nominated by student Rose Doucette (’10) for outstanding dedication and commitment to excellence in the classroom.

Student members of NSHSS have the opportunity to nominate the educator who made the most significant contribution to their academic career. The Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction award recognizes teacher role models who have made a lasting difference in their classroom by encouraging students to strive for excellence.

“Dedicated educators who exhibit a commitment to excellence deserve our highest praise and appreciation,” said NSHSS President James Lewis. “We’re excited to provide an ongoing means to do so, and we encourage our members to nominate teachers who have contributed to their academic success.”

Formed in 202, The National Society of High School Scholars recognizes academic excellence at the high school level and encourages members of the organization to apply their unique talents, vision, and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world. On March 6, Maria Bosonetto, grade seven, made her final promises as a member of the Sursum Corda Society. This sodality-like prayer group is run by Sister Marie Therese (our prioress and school principal) and Sister Maria Perpetua (the seventh and eighth grades’ teacher). The Society is for young ladies who wish to work and pray for the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in the lives of themselves, their families, and the religious and laity at Saint Benedict Center. The rainbow, the sign of God's promise and a symbol of hope, is also a type of Our Lady.

March 25 is the feast of the Annunciation, when Almighty God sent Saint Gabriel to ask Our Lady if she would be the Mother of God (and she said yes!). The Center follows an old tradition that March 25 is also the sixth day of Creation (the Creation of Adam) and the Redemption (Good Friday of 33 AD). Saint Louis Marie de Montfort recommends this feast day as the most important for Our Lady’s slaves of love because we are imitating Our Lord in the Incarnation by making ourselves entirely dependent upon the Virgin Mary. The religious, Brothers and Sisters, renew our consecration on this day — as do many of the lay people as well. Today two of our sixth graders, Lucia and Tavin, and well as the parents of one of our seventh graders, Mr. & Mrs. Baird, made their consecration to Jesus through Mary for the first time. Congratulations!

Another reason this feast day is a big one for us is that many of the Sisters (six out of eight) made our Profession of Vows on March 25. Here is a list of today’s anniversaries:
